Negotiating the car park was a nightmare - no-one had any cash for the meter and we weren't quite sure what the form was on arrival in the retaurant - everyone trying to down load apps and unable to speak to anyone on the phone at parking HQ. There needs to be an explanation in the carpark for Deck customers as to what to do. We were not the only ones confused either. 30 minutes from arrival to serving drinks and 1 hour to the arrival of the starter is not good enough. The rather racous vocal music was clearly chosen to suit the staff's taste rather than the diners. I spent the whole evening wrestling with my hearing aids trying to obtain a setting which would provide an equilibrium between the the intrusive mnusic and conversation with my dining companions. I failed and spent most of the evening trying to lip read. It is not normally a problem (no issue at the Crab and Lobster a few days earlier). Music in restaurants is like one of those free apps with lots of adverts that have to be endured. The staff were friendly, polite and well-intentioned, but appeared to be lacking in experience and very adept at avoiding eye contact with the customers. We were asked three times by three different members of staff after each course how our food was, which suggests insecurity rather than good customer service. We each shared two camemberts between four of us. It was very liquid as it was hot, but we had to ask for a spoon to be provided - it was unmanageable and messy with just a knife and fork. The hake was fresh and tasty. The tempura batter was a valiant effort but achieved a median between the fish and chip shop and a Japanese restaurant - not light enough, crisp (no uncooked batter mix) but a bit dark and oily. The fries were dark and flacid. Covid staff challenges notwithstanding, I was left with the impression that it was a restaurant which has had a good reputation but is resting on its reputation. I have heard many good reports from friends, it wasn't a disaster, but frankly I was disappointed.

Awkward this time. Having booked a table on the terrace we were directed to a table inside. We asked to be seated outside….. I had to check my next booking is as asked as we will have friends with us. My husband is unwell and the view is for his benefit. Being in the centre inside is of little benefit to him. Sometimes people make requests for a reason! Otherwise we always enjoy our visits.

Bacon buns shouldn't be brioche in my eyes, but each to their own
Although very busy, the serving staff were very attentive and excellent in keeping us informed. A drink by way of an apology for the delay was a really special touch. Would happily recommend to others.
