Service for me was fine; my friend who had arrived before me waited too long for her coffee, only to be told when she asked that there were several 'tickets' ahead and they were just doing hers. I counted no more than six customers in the cafe at the time. Not the first time I have experienced this. A pity, because I like the cafe

Food portions for the Mother's Day Sunday Roast on 10.3.24 were so very small that I felt embarrassed at having taken my entire family, including my elderly parents, here for their first visit. I have sung the praises of this cafe for so many years and I have never had this happen before. Although the tray bake cakes (which we filled up on for dessert) were as lovely as ever, the tiny size of all the roast-meat plates and the veggie-roast plates meant that we had to go to West Bay afterwards for toasted teacakes, as all 7 of us were still hungry (even the 82 year old parents who I consider have mouse-like appetites). More vegetables & potatoes were needed on all plates. Although the Yorkshire Pudding on the beef plate filled it up a little, a "smear" of carrot on the side of the plate, with a tiny thin segment of squash(?) the size of an apple segment, with a small single stem of broccoli & a couple of small pieces of roast potato, were completely inadequate for a main meal and the price being charged - this is a cafe, not a Michelin-starred tasting menu. My elderly parents eat tiny portions due to their age, but the portion size was not enough even for them and as for my adult children (who are all slim-built so not big eaters), they could hardly hide their shock as the plates were put in front of them, with the size of meal that could have fitted on a side plate, not a dinner plate. Sadly, after so many years, I will not be returning for such meagre portions for normal/above average prices. Please note, I would not have left this review at all, had I not received this email invitation to do so - I would just have voted with my feet and not returned.

On arrival we queued to get in and were left a long time before anybody interacted with us despite having a table booked. There were lots of staff but nobody seemed interested in taking control of the flow of people at the door. We dined at 2pm and found that a number of things on the menu had sold out, that made it tricky choosing something for our son, particularly as the toasties are pre-made so you can’t omit chilli for example. Main courses were good. Halloumi fries were a small portion for the price so didn’t feel like good value. We were offered the dessert menu but when we tried to order we’re told the kitchen was closed, this was after we had stopped a waitress to get her attention. They decided as it was just dessert they could make it for us. We had treacle tart which was tasty but the amount of custard was minuscule! Again didn’t feel like great value. We paid at the till. We had a nice time and would probably go back but not in a hurry. The surroundings were lovely and food was good but service poor and felt overpriced for some menu items.

I was served baked butter beans as part of the Meal. These should have been described on menu as spicy as they contained alot of paprika. I was refunded but felt let down and had to wait too long for replacement. Allergies should be addressed urgently.
